Benidorm is a Spanish city and municipality in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Community. It is located on the shores of the Mediterranean sea. Tourist capital of the Alicante Costa Blanca, it is also known as " Beniyork " or the New York of the Mediterranean. Benidorm is the city with the most skyscrapers in Spain, the third European city in terms of of skyscraper concentration after London and Milan. Benidorm is the city with the most skyscrapers per inhabitant in the world, and the second city with the most skyscrapers per square meter in the world, only behind New York.
Benidorm has a registered population of about 70.000 inhabitants, although the real number of inhabitants is around 100.000, since there is what is called a " floating " population, who live in the city for medium or long periods of time but without registering in the census of inhabitants of the city. During the summer, with the massive arrival of tourist, the city reaches 400.000 inhabitants.
The transformation of Benidorm began in the 50s of the last century, specifically in 1956, the City Council approved the urban planning of the town in order to create a city designed for tourist leisure, based on well-designed streets and wide avenues, following the configuration of the beaches, a pioneering urban model at the time it was built. From then on, there was a strong displacement of traditional activities { fishing and agriculture } towards the services sector originated by tourism, which since then became the basic of the city prosperity.
In the 60,s,70,s and 80,s the city continued its expansion, especially with the construction of hotels and residential apartment. With the real estate boom of the 90,s a new era begins in the expansion of Benirorm, since this is carried out vertically with the start of the construction of the first skyscrapers, which extends until the first and second decade of the 2000s, and which today, in the year 2023, construction continues, especially vertically.
There are many ways to approach a photographic project of exterior architecture, and more in cities like Benidorm. For several weeks I walked many hours through its streets and avenues photographing numerous buildings, in order to carry out " that " photographic project of the architecture of Benidorm, and the result of said project was not one report but three report, and Vertical Delirium is the first of them. It is a work of Fine Art of architectural photography, also a bit Minimalist, most of the images have been taken from a low angle view, and in all of them there is an element as important or more than the building and skyscrapers them selves, which are the Lamppost. So, mixing all the elements mentioned above with one, two and even three points of photographic overexposure, the result is Vertical Delirium, and you have it in front of your eyes.
