Signals is an ongoing documentary photography project that aims to show the uniqueness of traffic signs in a vast country like Australia, where estimates from the year 2022 indicate that there are 427.000 kilometers of paved roads. But in addition, in this documentary project I want to show other signs that are not specifically traffic-related, such as sings on beaches, urban and rural areas, etc.
Australian traffic sings are standardized across the country and categorized into warning, regulatory, road work, and guide signs to ensure road safety and compliance.
Traffic signs in Australia are regulated by state governments but follow a national standard to maintain consistency across the country. The National Transport Commission {NTC} established the first set of rules in 1999, and signs use the AS 1744:2015 Highway Gothic Typeface. Australian signs are influenced by both US and UK designs, with yellow diamonds for warnings, green for directions, and black-and-white for mandatory instructions, while speed limits and roadwork signs often follow UK conventions.
